Defensive Driving Course is a refreshing course for licensed vehicle drivers to acquired the necessary skills to minimize the risk of driving on the road.
According to The Royal Police Department of Malaysia, there are 402,626 road accidents recorded from January-September 2022, with 4,378 fatalities.
This is in fact, a shocking figure for a country with a population of only 34 millions people.
In order to assist the Malaysia Road Transport Department’s (JPJ) efforts to bring down the alarming rate of accidents in the country.
Most of the driving institutes in our country have being offering Defensive Driving Course for the public.
Driving institutes have been chosen to conduct the course because they have the facilities likes the lecture halls, driving circuits and a team of licensed and professional driving instructors as the coaches.
The topics chosen for the course are tailored on the aspect of safety on the roads and the prevention of vehicle accidents.
In order to simplified the learning process, the course is divided into topics. The topics are as follows.

Road Signs
In this lesson, the coach would explained in details the meaning of the different road signages commonly found in the roads and highways.
The participants of the course would be educated the importance of abiding by the traffic rules.
KEJARA System (Road Safety System)
The other interesting feature of the lessons are how the Demerit Points (KEJARA) System operates under the Motor Vehicle Rules.
Demerit points are recorded through the serving of summons for traffic offences and an action will be take by the relevant authority if a driver obtained 20 or more demerit points.
JOURNEY MANAGEMENT
(a) Vehicle Maintenance
In this subject the participants of the course would be guided on how to conduct Routine Vehicle Maintenance (RPK), Pre-driving Routine inspections(RSM) and checking of emergency safety tools in an orderly manners with for just a few minutes
(B)Fatigue Management
The vehicle drivers constitutes 90% of road accident. Therefore, the drivers must make sure to theirs mental and physical conditions are good before they could embarking on a journey.
(c) Times Management
The course also emphasize the importance of planning the journeys well in order, to reach the intended destination on the schedule and safely too.
Always start the journey earlier to avoid caught in peak hours traffic jam because driving in a rushing manners during that period could increase the risk of getting an accident.
SAFE DISTANCE RULE
Two(2) Second rule
The coach of the course would explained in length how to keep a safe distance from tailing behind another vehicle by utilizing 2 second rule visual scan technique.
Four(4) Second Rule
However, during a raining day, 4 seconds visual scan should be applied in order for the drivers to stop the vehicle safely during an emergency stop on a wet road surface.
BLIND SPOT
In this section, the participants of the course would be taught blind spots that could not be seen through the rear view and side view mirrors.
The coach would therefore demonstrate to them how to overcome these blind spots by looking over their shoulder at the areas that could not be seen from the mirrors.
OVERTAKING RULE
There are safety measures to be taken when one intended to overtake another vehicle at the front.
Similarly to the 2 or 4 seconds visual scan rules. Overtaking other vehicles safely requires 12 seconds rule.
IDENTIFYING HAZARDS
The lessons are becoming more interesting this is because at this section the coach would elaborating in details with the aids of slide shows and video clips to make the participants understand better.
There are three main types of hazards. They are physical hazards, moving hazards and hazards due to the road conditions and the weather.
HAZARD ACTION PLAN
Therefore, the effective way to overcome these hazards is applying the strategy of the ‘Hazard Action Plan’. The formula are as follows: Identify, Predict, Decide then Act.
